INGREDIENTS

  • Butter – Use salted butter at room temperature.
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Eggs – One large egg plus one additional egg yolk.
  • Flour – All-purpose flour, spooned and leveled.
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • M&Ms – Red and green Christmas-colored M&Ms, plus extra to press on top.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, cream together the room-temperature butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until light and fluffy—about 4 to 5 minutes.

Add the vanilla, the whole egg, and the extra egg yolk. Beat until fully combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined—do not overmix.

Fold in the Christmas-colored M&Ms until evenly distributed through the dough.

Scoop dough into 3-tablespoon sized balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.

Bake for about 12 minutes or until the bottoms are golden. The centers may look slightly underbaked—that’s okay.

Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking pan before transferring. Residual heat will finish cooking them and they will settle and flatten slightly.

While the cookies are still warm, press a few extra M&Ms gently into the tops for a polished look.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

STORING THE COOKIES

Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They stay fresh for up to four days.

CAN I FREEZE THEM?

Yes. You can freeze either the baked cookies or the portioned dough balls for up to three months. If baking from frozen, add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

HOW TO GET PERFECTLY ROUND COOKIES

Right after removing the cookies from the oven, place a round cookie cutter slightly larger than the cookie over it and rotate gently to smooth the edges. A glass or jar lid works in place of a cutter.

WHAT DOES SPOONED AND LEVELLED FLOUR MEAN?

Spoon flour into the measuring cup and level it off with a knife. Scooping the cup into the flour compresses it and yields too much flour, which can make cookies dry.

CAN I MAKE THE COOKIES SMALLER?

Yes. For smaller cookies, scoop 1.5 tablespoons of dough and bake for about 8 to 9 minutes.

Notes

*Spooned and levelled flour refers to the way of measuring flour. To properly measure flour you should scoop spoonfuls of flour into your measuring cup and then scrape with a knife to level off the access. Scooping the measuring cup directly into your flour cause the flour to compress and getting more than the recipe calls for.
