A rich meat sauce always brings back comforting memories. Hearty and full of flavor, this classic family staple often takes hours on the stovetop for the flavors to deepen. With the Instant Pot, you can make a large batch quickly without sacrificing depth of taste. This recipe delivers a thick, chunky sauce that’s simple to prepare and freezes well for future meals.
Instant Pot Spaghetti Meat Sauce Recipe
The Instant Pot turns this paleo and Whole30-friendly meat sauce into a set-it-and-forget-it meal. After a short prep and some sautéing, the pressure cooker does the rest. The sauce includes plenty of vegetables, yet it’s mild enough for kids—my little one always asks for seconds. Follow the straightforward steps below for a dependable, comforting sauce everyone will enjoy.

How to Make Paleo Spaghetti Meat Sauce in the Instant Pot
After sautéing and browning, this meat sauce requires about 20 minutes of high-pressure cook time in a 6-quart Instant Pot. The ingredients are common pantry and fridge staples, and the method is forgiving—perfect for busy weeknights.
- Cook the aromatics. Set a 6-qt Instant Pot to SAUTÉ and heat the ghee. Add the diced onion, carrot, and celery and cook, stirring, until the onions are translucent.
- Brown the meat. Add the mild Italian sausage and ground beef and cook for 7–8 minutes, breaking up the meat, until mostly browned.
- Add flavorings. Stir in the tomato paste, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and cook for about 1 minute to bloom the flavors.
- Add tomatoes. Turn off the Instant Pot and stir in the crushed tomatoes.
- Pressure cook. Close the lid, set the valve to Sealing, and cook on Manual HIGH for 20 minutes. If you use an 8-qt Instant Pot or if you get a “burn” notice, add a splash of beef or chicken broth before pressure cooking so the unit can come to pressure.
- Release pressure. Allow the pressure to release naturally, about 15 minutes, then open the lid.
- Finish (optional). If the sauce is thinner than you prefer, set the Instant Pot to SAUTÉ with the lid off and simmer 10–15 minutes until reduced and thickened.
- Serve. Garnish with chopped parsley or basil and serve immediately.
This recipe yields about 6 cups of sauce—roughly eight generous servings—and results in a pleasantly thick, chunky texture when prepared as directed.

If Your Paleo Spaghetti Meat Sauce Gets a “Burn” Notice in the Instant Pot…
A burn notice can occur with larger Instant Pots (8-qt) or when crushed tomatoes are very thick. To prevent this, add a small amount of beef or chicken broth before pressure cooking to thin the mixture slightly and help the cooker reach pressure. That usually resolves the issue.
If Your Sauce is Too Thin…
If you added broth to prevent a burn notice and the sauce ends up too thin, thicken it by setting the Instant Pot to SAUTÉ with the lid off and simmering for 10–15 minutes until it reaches the desired consistency.
