This past weekend was my second weekend of 200-hour yoga teacher training. I left the studio buzzing with new lessons in anatomy and Sanskrit names for familiar poses.

Between finishing a take-home quiz on yoga history and reading the Bhagavad Gita, I knew preparing breakfast in advance would make long studio days easier. With an 8–6 schedule on Saturday, I needed a grab-and-go option that would sustain energy and keep me focused.

Fall mornings have me reaching for warm, spiced drinks, so I decided to combine that comfort with my usual overnight oats. If you love chai with your oatmeal, these Chocolate Chia Chai Overnight Oats blend both into a simple, portable meal.

The mixture of chocolate, chia, and chai spices creates a cozy, slightly spicy breakfast that’s easy to make in a jar and perfect for busy weekdays or long practice days.

Chai Concentrate for Flavor

Chai adds warm complexity to these oats. The idea came from a reader suggestion to flavor porridge with tea, and it turned out to be delightful.

Using a concentrated spicy masala chai brings notes of ginger, black tea, and warming spices into the oats without extra fuss. I combine the chai concentrate 1:1 with unsweetened almond milk to form the liquid base, then use that mixture in place of part of the milk called for in a standard overnight oat recipe.

The chai concentrate I used is lightly sweetened and spicy, but you can adjust added sweeteners to taste. A splash of maple syrup pairs nicely if you prefer a sweeter profile.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This combination balances chocolate, chai spice, and chia for texture and nutrition. You’ll need:

  • gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
  • unsweetened almond milk
  • masala chai concentrate (or strong brewed chai)
  • maple syrup (optional)
  • chia seeds
  • chocolate protein powder (optional)
  • raw cacao powder
  • cacao nibs
  • dried figs, sliced

Chocolate and chai create a sweet-spicy harmony. If you prefer less sweetness, skip the maple syrup — the chai concentrate may already supply enough.

How to Make and Serve

These oats are fast to assemble and make a great pre-made breakfast. They’re high in fiber, plant protein (especially if you add a protein powder), and provide a gentle caffeine boost from the chai.

The recipe below makes one serving but can be doubled or tripled to prep multiple jars for the week. I like adding a scoop of chocolate protein powder for an extra hit of chocolate and satiety, though it’s optional.

If the oats feel too thick when you eat them, stir in a splash of almond milk to loosen the consistency. Serve chilled straight from the fridge or warm briefly in the microwave, then top with sliced dried figs and cacao nibs for crunch.

Customize with additional toppings such as granola, nuts, seeds, or fresh fruit. These oats travel well and make mornings much simpler.

Enjoy!
