With summer now in full swing, it felt like the right time to update the chalkboard that sits on our mantel. It previously featured a spring quote and a few Easter doodles, so a change was overdue. Fireplace Hearth
The accessories on the hearth mostly came from my favorite store, HomeGoods. I love hunting for great finds there, and this black metal lantern has moved around our home over the years until it settled on the hearth last season. A simple wood box holds a few throw pillows—my favorite numbered pillow included—and together with the lantern they remain on the hearth year-round for a cozy, lived-in look.
The wood box is an easy decorative piece that adds texture and storage for seasonal pillows or throws. Keeping a couple of neutral accessories on the hearth makes swapping seasonal accents quick and simple.
Fireplace Mantel
The mantel decor changes more frequently with the seasons. Sometimes I hang a mirror, other times I use a chalkboard. Candles are a constant— they bring warmth and a focal point even in summer. For this look I used a blue-framed chalkboard to add a personalized touch and seasonal charm.
The blue-framed chalkboard is perfect for rotating messages and seasonal art. I like to change the chalk design for every season, holiday, or family celebration. For this summer display I listed activities our family plans to enjoy, creating a fun, personal piece that invites conversation.
Hydrangeas were a key element in this vignette. Our plants grew larger than ever this year after we adjusted our pruning routine, and the blooms are abundant. I love both the bright blue when they’re fresh and the softer hues as they begin to fade—those colors complement the chalkboard frame nicely. A few clipped stems in a simple mason jar add effortless cottage charm to the mantel.
I also arranged several hydrangea stems in a white farmhouse-style jug for a fuller display. The jug’s simple silhouette and neutral finish bring a relaxed, farmhouse feel to the mantel and pair well with the wood and metal accents.
Two black candlesticks have been part of our mantel styling for years. I recently updated them with a pair that nods to the modern farmhouse trend I’ve been gradually introducing into our decor. They were a seasonal find and gave us the exact look we wanted at a good price—small updates like this make a big visual impact.
